Platelet Rich Plasma for Hair Regrowth

What is Platelet Rich Plasma?

PRP is derived from our own blood. Our blood contains Red Blood Cell, White Blood Cell, Platelets, and Plasma, each had its own function. PRP is a concentrated solution of platelets exacted from our own blood. When there is a wound on our body, platelets will clump together and stop bleeding. After that, they release cytokines to trigger healing of wound. Its unique healing properties have long been used in surgical field to encourage healing after surgery.

Why PRP is useful for hair regrowth?

Our natural platelets stores plenty of growth factor, when injected under the scalp skin, it triggers a cascade of healing process. Healing process includes formation of new vessels(angiogenesis) and stimulate new dermal papilla cell(hair follicles). The new blood vessel will improve blood circulation around the scalp and provide more nutrients to the hair roots. As a result, new hair growth is stimulated and less hair falls from existing hairs.

Clinical Studies:

“Overall positive clinical response to the use of PRP in androgenetic and alopecia areata patients is observed. The effects on hair density, count, and thickness were demonstrated through multiple clinical trials. . . “(1)

“Plasma rich in growth factors seemed to reduce the perivascular inflammatory infiltrate (inflammatory conditions which can lead to hair loss as in androgenetic alopecia ), promote the remodeling of dermo-epidermal tissue, and increase bulge stem cell niches (Hair undergoes a regenerative and rest stage managed by stem cells in a region of the skin known as the “bulge.”) Patients declared an overall positive satisfaction, and a high clinical improvement score was achieved.” (2)

Who should do PRP?

  • Female pattern hair loss
  • Male pattern hair loss
  • Men and women of any age with overall thinning and weaker hair
  • Alopecia Areata(together with medical treatment)
  • Men and women who want to increase the chance of survival of their hair transplantation
  • Hair loss patients who want to create extra effect in combination with other hair treatments

How frequent should I do PRP?

We recommend monthly treatment initially. Once new hair is forming, we recommend maintenance treatment of 3-6month interval. It also depends on the type of hair loss and duration of hair loss. Usually hair loss had high success cure rate when treated early.

Is there any side effect?

PRP is a safe procedure because it involves using your own blood. Some people could experience pain during injection but it differs from each individual pain threshold. However to prevent contamination of PRP during process, it is advisable to use special PRP kit with close system instead of normal blood taking tube.

“No side effects were noted during treatment. The data clearly highlight the positive effects of PRP injections on male pattern hair loss and absence of major side effects” (3)
