What Is Pigmentation ?

Skin pigmentation is a typical Asian skin condition where there is an abnormal production of melanin by melanocytes. Melanocytes are cells that produce pigment. These pigment deposit in our skin, determine our skin colour and protect our skin from harmful UV rays.

However, hyperpigmentation happened when there is an abnormal production of melanin and deposit in various layers of skin. It can be affected by genetics, hormonal changes, infections, sun exposure, medical conditions, or aging.

Usually, there are more than one type of pigmentation that are usually found and exist at the same time and area. Some of the commonly found pigmentations are melasma, freckles, Ota Nevus, dark spots, etc. Each pigmentation needs to be accurately diagnosed and a treatment plan should be customized according to each individual’s condition.
